SHOW SYNOPSIS

We want to believe that serendipity brings us together, but is that just a myth? Mining the comedy of missed connections, THIS RANDOM WORLD asks the serious question of how often we travel parallel paths through the world without noticing. From an ailing woman who plans one final trip, to her daughter planning one great escape and her son falling prey to a prank gone wrong, this funny, intimate, and heartbreaking play explores the lives that may be happening just out of reach of our own. --from Dramatists Play Service

FROM THE DIRECTOR John Elliott

Intersections. Crossroads. It's synchronicity. It’s coincidence. Or, it’s that momentary connection that goes unnoticed—at least by its participants. That is the crux of This Random World by Steven Dietz. More-or-less parallel lives unfolding naturally even if sometimes connecting somewhat mystically. Such is life.

PREPARATION NOTES

Follow the instructions found on the This Random World Audition Sides document. Record a video on your phone or computer of you reading the side. In addition to your audition video, please download, fill out, and attach our audition form located at tinyurl.com/MTAuditionForm and email it to jelliott@peak.org by 7pm on Monday, April 5th. You do not have to read for the character you are auditioning for. Also, if you have one, please attach a headshot image to your audition email. It doesn’t need to be a professional headshot; any clear image of your face will do wonderfully. This will be posted with the cast list.

Some video audition guidelines:

  • Perform while seated, trying to frame yourself from the shoulders up. This is what you’ll look like in the video chat during the performance, so we’ll want to see how well you can emote in this limited space.

  • Props and costume pieces are encouraged! Whatever you have lying around. Just keep in mind that we can only see your torso and head!

  • Actors of any gender, age, race, or ability are invited to audition for any role.

  • In order to participate in the performance, you’ll need a stable internet connection; a smartphone, computer, or tablet that can run Zoom; and a pair of headphones. A green screen would also be helpful, but not crucial. If you do not have access to this tech, this will not disqualify you from auditioning for these roles, but we’ll want to know so that we can line up checking out equipment to you.

  • If needed, we will set up a Zoom meeting to hear actors read together.

  • Once the show is cast we will schedule a readthrough and work out rehearsal schedules.

  • If you have any questions, feel free to email and ask!
