SHOW SYNOPSIS

She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, she finds herself on an unexpected journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was her sister’s haven. A dramatic comedy filled with homicidal fairies, evil cheerleaders, and pop culture, by acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen.

“She Kills Monsters: Virtual Realms” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

FROM THE DIRECTOR BreAnna Manassa

Anyone who has ever played Dungeons and Dragons knows about the power of stories. Stories can help us forge bonds, engage with our emotional depths, and enrich our lives. One of my passions is exploring stories with others, so it is my great privilege to be directing a show that focuses on that through a blend of artforms I hold dear: theatre and D&D.

PREPARATION NOTES

Please choose ONE of the following sides. Record a video on your phone or computer of you

reading the side, and email it to btmanassa@gmail.com by 5PM on Friday, February

26th. Feel free to include what role you’re interested in within the body of the email. Also, if you have one, please attach a headshot image to your audition email. It doesn’t need to be a professional headshot; any clear image of your face will do wonderfully.

Some video audition guidelines:

  • Perform while seated, trying to frame yourself from the shoulders up. This is what you’ll look like in the video chat during the performance, so we’ll want to see how well you can emote in this limited space.

  • Props and costume pieces are encouraged! Whatever you have lying around. Just keep in mind that we can only see your torso and head!

  • Actors of any gender, age, race, or ability are invited to audition for any role. We will be casting 13 performers and one Emergency Backup Actor, an understudy for all roles who can hop into the digital performance at any time to cover for another actor who might be experiencing technical difficulties.

  • In order to participate in the performance, you’ll need a stable internet connection; a smartphone, computer, or tablet that can run Zoom; and a pair of headphones. Most roles in this play have the potential to use software-based special effects in a program called SnapCamera, which requires using a computer with Windows 10/Mac OS 10.13 or newer. A green screen would also be helpful, but not crucial. If you do not have access to this tech, this will not disqualify you from auditioning for these roles, but we’ll want to know so that we can line up checking out equipment to you.

  • If you have any questions, feel free to email and ask!

SIDES

NARRATOR

In a time before Facebook, Worlds of Warcraft, and Massive Multiplayer Online RPGs, there once simply existed… a game. Forged by the hands of nerds, crafted in the minds of geeks, and so advanced in its advanciness it would take five whole editions to contain all its mighty geekery. And here in the land of Ohio during the year of 2019, one of the rarest types of geeks walked the earth. A Dungeon Master without fear… prejudice… or a penis. This nerd was a girl-nerd, the most uncommon form of nerd in the world and her name was Tilly Evans. But this story isn’t about her… This is a story about her sister…

TILLY

(As Tillus the Paladin) Useless. I didn’t pull off killing her. I just wounded her in the belly. And now she’s stolen my soul for revenge. My friends, I cannot ask all of you to come with me. The journey before us is too perilous and the prize too personal for me to expect you to risk your lives.

[...]

(As Tilly the memory) No, we play it because it’s awesome. It’s about adventures and saving the world and having magic. And maybe -- I guess -- in some small teeny capacity, it might have a little to do with wish fulfillment. Kelly gets to run, Ronnie gets to be super strong… Me? I get to save the princess.

AGNES

My memories? My memories are shit. Do you want to know what my memories of Tilly are? They’re of this little nerdy girl who I never talked to, who I ignored, who I didn’t understand because she didn’t live in the same world as I did. Her world was filled with evil jello-molds and demon queens while mine… had pep rallies and cute haircuts. I didn’t get her. I assumed one day I would -- that one day she’d grow out of all this -- that I’d be able to sit around and ask her about normal things like clothes and TV shows and boys… and as it turns out, no one can even tell me if she was into boys or not.

MILES

So you think I’m here, getting attacked by you, because I think she’s just cute? Are you high? Of course I “L-bomb” her. But Jesus, Vera, she lost her sister last year. There’s other things on her mind than me. I’ve just been taking it slow. For her. You’re not the only person in the world that wants to protect her. Doesn’t matter either way, because she’s now dating a freshman.

CHUCK

Yo, what’s up, my cool cats and hot hotties, it’s your boy, DM Biggs, ready for all adventurers to join his newest campaign of hot demon girls, sultry she-devils, and monstrous maidens. Who’s with me? (pause) Oh come on. Where are you guys? Ron? Kelly? You out there?

[...]

You’re looking at him! But my hommies just call me DM Biggs ‘cause, you know, I’m “big” where it counts.

(wait for it…)

As in MY BRAIN! Not because I’m fat. Seriously, it really has nothing to do with body mass index, I actually work out -- so, um, how can I help you?
