2026-27 Season Proposal

Freaky Friday: A New Musical
Book by Bridget Carpenter, music and lyrics by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey
Directed by Ruth Mandsager
Music Direction by Jim Martinez
Show Synopsis
From MTI:
"When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic, and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic. By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another's struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.
This show features leading roles for young actors and adults ( 7 Principals) with multiple opportunities for actors to portray multiple smaller roles (10 named ensemble roles) and an easily expandable ensemble of youth and adults."
Vision Statement
In my past productions I have had the chance to work with many of the talented folks from Corvallis and surrounding areas and one of the reoccurring themes is a desire for parents to be able to be in a show with their children. Freaky Friday offers that opportunity. It also lends itself to the needs of the Majestic with the use of contemporary costumes and minimal set requirements.
What really draws me to this script is having both female presenting main characters that really require acting finesse (an area which I rely on as my strength as an acting coach) where the "mother and daughter" roles are required to "switch" bodies.
The score by Tom Kitt is also a draw for me. He has a brilliant way of providing challenging but performable songs that are not only fun and upbeat, but also moving and beautiful as the show delves into some hard and meaningful life lessons. On the surface the show could be assumed to be Disney "fluff" but at its heart it truly has grit and integrity.
Freaky Friday will attract youth and adult audiences of all ages. The Disney movies are well know and highly entertaining. The musical is the same and then some. Disney is a draw every time, and the summer sequel to Freaky Friday, Freakier Friday, will generate new audiences!
