EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Our youth theatre classes and camps are the heart of our educational programs at the Majestic. Instilling a passion for theatre in children, helping aspiring young thespians gain the skills they need to succeed onstage, and giving youth the confidence to express their creativity are cornerstones of the work of a community theatre. Some kids want to try one improv class to hang out with their friends, while others want to be involved in every class and production that they can. Luckily, we offer many opportunities for all levels of interest, age, and skills!

MAJESTIC THEATRE YOUTH PRODUCTIONS:
AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM
Afterschool Programs

For children who are interested in a performance-based theatrical experience, we offer a thrice-yearly afterschool program in Fall, Winter, and Spring. Each term provides a slightly different experience to cater to children and families with different interests, experience levels, and scheduling needs.

Please note: unlike our summer musical and Shakespeare camps, our Majestic Theatre Youth Productions afterschool programs do not require auditions before registering—the afterschool programs have open registration with a low-key audition on the first day of the program.

Our Fall afterschool program runs from early October through mid-December on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:30pm-6:30pm (4:30pm-7:30pm during tech week). Children experience mounting a mainstage holiday musical from beginning to end, with auditions in the first week, rehearsals over subsequent weeks, and a weekend of performances for family, friends, and the wider community to round out the experience. They are taught the basics of blocking and rehearsal etiquette while learning songs and dances, memorizing lines, and helping to create their own costumes and props with the help of a dedicated team of Majestic staff.

Our Winter afterschool program runs from early January to mid-February on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:30pm-6:30pm (4:30pm-7:30pm during tech week). Slightly smaller in scale than our Fall program, the Winter term stages either a straight play or a simple musical with minimal sets in front of the curtain in the main auditorium. We offer two weekend performances as a culmination for this iteration of the program.

Our Spring afterschool program runs in three mini-sessions of two weeks apiece in April and May on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4pm-6pm to create opportunities for children who might not have the time to commit for a six- or eight-week program, or for kids who just want to give this whole performance thing a try! We still mount a whole show, but in a simpler and shorter form, and there’s a performance showcase on the last day of the class rather than a full weekend of performances. It’s a great first step on a theatrical journey.

MAJESTIC THEATRE YOUTH PRODUCTIONS: SUMMER INTENSIVES
Summer Intensives

For children and teens who’ve really caught the theatre bug, we offer a more concentrated experience in our summer intensives.

For musically inclined children ages 9-15, our summer auditions-only musical day camp is the perfect fit! This program stages a junior version of a full Broadway musical. We hold auditions in the Spring, have a meet and greet in June, and the camp itself runs for three weeks in July, Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm. Children learn songs, choreography, and lines while preparing for a full weekend of (generally sold-out) performances on our mainstage, with sets, lights, and costumes.

Our Willy Wonka summer adventure is past, but mark your calendars for next year's musical: Walt Disney's Mary Poppins, Jr.

For older youth ages 12-18, our auditions-only Shakespeare day camp is a great experience. During the height of the pandemic, we launched a program called Shakespeare in the Stark to give teens a chance to perform outdoor Shakespeare. Starting in 2023, we decided to move it indoors and onto our mainstage! We hold auditions in the Spring, have a meet and greet in June, and the camp itself runs for three weeks in August, Monday-Friday, 12pm-4:30pm. Teens help choose the concept and setting of the production, learn classical theatre techniques and history, and contribute to costumes, sets, and makeup designs, all while staging a 90-minute cut of one of Shakespeare’s famous plays. They’ll also experience a smattering of basic stage combat, early modern stagecraft, and the ever-popular Blood Day! The camp culminates in a pair of weekend performances on our mainstage.

Our summer Shakespeare camp is past, but mark your calendars for next year's Shakespeare camp!
