SHOW SYNOPSIS

In The Hatmaker's Wife, a young woman moves in with her boyfriend expecting domestic bliss, but instead has trouble getting comfortable. Her strange new home seems determined to help out – and soon the walls are talking. They reveal the magical tale of an old hatmaker and his long-suffering wife who runs away with his favorite hat. This sweet and surreal folktale bends time and space to redefine the idea of family, home, and true-love itself.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

General Note Example: All characters do not have a specific race or ethnic background; we're excited to see a diverse pool of actors audition for all roles.

HETCHMAN

Age: 65 - 90 Ageless

Must present as male.

A man set in his ways and obsessed with his hat and has little time for anything else. Oblivious, a bit cantankerous, curmudgeonly

HETCHMAN’S WIFE

Age 65 - 90 Ageless Must present as female

A woman who is nothing but supportive, smart, and lovely. Deserves the world, but asks only for crumbs. As her name entails, she is indeed Hetchman’s unfortunate wife.

MECKEL

Age: 65 - 90 Ageless Must present as male.

A best friend to Hetchman. Best because he is the only friend Hetchman has. Wonderful, kind, charming and charming. He is the opposite of Hetchman.

VOICE

Age: Late 20s to early 30s Must present as female.

A young woman who questions her life. Strong, hard-working, either wise or smart, she doesn’t know yet. Means well, always, but isn’t capable of it, usually.

GABE

Age: Late 20s to early 30s Must present as male.

Voice’s Boyfriend, A young man who doesn’t question his life. A problem-solver to a fault, which he will try to solve as well.

WALL

Age; 65 - 90 Ageless Must present as female.

A wall. She has seen the history of this house and ventures to tell the story. Patient, or maybe not. Didactic, but probably not. Think well-meaning Aunt.

GOLEM/STAGE ASSISTANT

Age: Ageless, Probably 20 - 40 Must present as male. One actor will play both roles. Neither character has lines. Golem - (Not to be confuse with Gollum.) The Jewish golem of Prague. Only makes sounds but does intuit what is going on. Eats a lot. Made of mud.

Stage Assistant - Stage Assistant - A kuroko-style performer, in the vein of the performative stagehands of the kabuki tradition. Reads as "invisible" to the audience. Moves furniture and props onstage. Handles floating baby and hats. NOTE: Tall. A modern dance or stage movement background would be a plus.
