SHOW SYNOPSIS
In the court of the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, Antonio Salieri is the established composer. Enter the greatest musical genius of all time: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salieri has given himself to God so that he might realize his sole ambition, to be a great composer. Mozart is a foul-mouthed, graceless oaf who has that which is beyond Salieri’s envious grasp: genius.
FROM THE DIRECTOR, Riley Lucas
PLEASE READ!!: We welcome performers of all gender identities to audition for this production, although the directorial vision calls for a strong preference towards casting female and non-binary performers. The Majestic does have other audition opportunities that are seeking to fill a large spread of roles for male-identifying performers, including Mister Roberts, Shakespeare in Love, and My Fair Lady.
The chance to direct this iconic show is an honor and a privilege. I am thrilled to bring a unique and fresh vision to this play. “Amadeus” has always been a profound exploration of genius, jealousy, and the complexities of human emotion. This particular production aims to break new ground by intending to cast female and non-binary actors in roles traditionally played by male performers.
The decision to cast female and non-binary performers stems from my desire to challenge traditional gender roles and offer a new perspective on these characters. While “Amadeus” is based on real historical figures, it is a highly fictionalized retelling of their lives. My hope is to not only provide opportunities for underrepresented voices in theater but also invite the audience to experience the story in a non-traditional way. When I think about the “Mozarts” of modern day – creatives who are provocative mold-breakers who are challenging societal norms, I see women, queer folk, and people of color at the forefront of the movement. People who, like Mozart, are facing backlash for upsetting the status quo. These are the voices I want to uplift in this particular production.
I am inspired by the incredible talent and resilience of female and non-binary actors, especially those that I’ve had the pleasure to see and meet here at the Majestic, and it is my honor to create a space where their voices can shine. This production aims to be a celebration of their artistry and a testament to the transformative power of theater.
I invite you all to join us on this extraordinary journey and witness “Amadeus” like never before!
“Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius." ~ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
